A fireball lit up the sky over western Canada yesterday evening as a meteor came streaking through the atmosphere.  The bright light was reported at 9:40 pm local time and was visible from a large area of western Canada.  The above video was recorded south of Calgary, Alberta, which gives scope to just how bright this meteor display was.

Dr. Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary speculates that the meteor could have been up to 100 kg before it broke up. The professor of geophysics went on to say that he calculates it landed somewhere near Rockhaven (now aptly named), Saskatchewan, which is southwest of North Battleford.

“I would say this was a good size,” Hildebrand said. “One witness in Rockhaven who was out walking, saw the ground light up around them and looked up to see it in the sky almost overhead.”
